Flight Diverted to Another Airport: Transfers, Costs and Arrival Time

By FlyClaimer Editorial Team Published Sep 15, 2026 Passenger Rights

A diversion creates a ground-transport problem as well as a flight-delay question. Record where the airline agreed to take you, the transfer offer and when you arrived.

Landed at the wrong airport? Start with the transfer

Quick answer: A diverted flight does not automatically earn fixed compensation. On an EU-covered journey diverted to an airport serving the same town, city or region, the airline must bear the cost of transfer to the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with you. Record that agreement, the transport offered and your arrival after the transfer.

Your flight app may say arrived while you are still a long way from the airport on your ticket. Before deciding whether to leave by bus, train or taxi, find out where the airline intends to take you and when. The immediate task is completing the journey; the compensation assessment comes after the route, timing and cause are established.

This guide explains the EU diversion framework. UK coverage and US obligations are considered separately below. An airline using the word diversion does not itself establish which law applies or whether the event is legally a cancellation.

Different events need different questions

You landed at a nearby alternative airportWhether it serves the same town, city or region and where the transfer ends.Ask for the transport offer and record the completed arrival time.
You landed much farther awayWhether you accepted onward rerouting and what destination was agreed.Request a complete onward plan; do not assume the same-region rule settles it.
The aircraft returned to departureWhether the original operation was abandoned and you were moved to another flight.Use the cancellation guide to assess the choices.

The EU passenger-rights guidance distinguishes arrival at another airport from cancellation in specified circumstances, including same-region alternatives and accepted rerouting. A distant airport is not simply a nearby alternative because a booking website uses the same destination label.

The EU transfer rule and its limits

In CJEU case C-826/19, the Court explained that same-town, city or region does not require identical administrative boundaries. The practical relationship between the airports matters. The operating carrier should offer the transfer on its own initiative; passengers should not have to guess that they can ask.

The obligation is to the originally booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with the passenger. It is not automatically a free ride to any home, hotel or holiday destination. Ask for confirmation if a railway station or hotel is more useful than returning to the booked airport. Save the name and location of the agreed endpoint.

If the airline fails to provide the required transfer, necessary, appropriate and reasonable self-arranged transport costs can be recoverable. That failure does not, by itself, create a separate flat-rate compensation payment. Keep the transfer-expense request distinct from any arrival-delay claim.

Before leaving the terminal

  1. Confirm the flight status. Is the journey finished, continuing on the same aircraft or being replaced? Do not leave a continuing flight without clarifying your booking.
  2. Ask for the transfer details. Get the pickup point, departure time, destination and who is covered by the arrangement.
  3. Check practical needs. Explain mobility requirements, child-seat needs, luggage or a connection deadline. A proposed coach may need an accessible alternative.
  4. Clarify checked baggage. Ask whether it will be delivered at the diversion airport or continue elsewhere. Keep any baggage report separate from the flight claim.
  5. Save the response. Keep messages and a short factual note of spoken instructions, including the time and channel.

If assistance is not forthcoming, compare viable transport before spending. Record why a cheaper service did not work, such as no remaining departure or an accessibility barrier. Do not abandon a suitable airline coach simply because a private taxi is preferable and assume every extra cost will be repaid.

Which arrival time should you record?

For the EU same-region situation addressed in C-826/19, arrival delay is assessed by reference to reaching the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with the airline after the transfer. The landing timestamp at the diversion airport may therefore not be the end of the relevant journey.

Illustrative timeline: record each stage separately

Arrival at diversion airport19:20Airline status and your arrival record.
Airline coach departs20:15Transfer message and a contemporaneous note.
Coach reaches booked airport21:25Arrival note, message or other timestamped supporting evidence.

Worked example: these invented times produce a three-hour, 25-minute difference from the original scheduled arrival, not one hour, 20 minutes. That calculation alone does not establish compensation: EU coverage, the cause and the remaining conditions still need review. Do not add a voluntary sightseeing stop or an unrelated onward journey to the clock.

Write the date and time zone where the journey crosses midnight or a time-zone boundary. Preserve an itinerary before an app replaces it with the amended journey. A screenshot saying only arrived leaves important questions unanswered.

Weather, safety and fixed compensation

A diversion may follow weather, an airport restriction, a medical event or an operational problem. Save the airline's stated cause; do not infer it from a cloudy photograph or a story about another flight. The extraordinary-circumstances guide explains why causation and reasonable measures matter.

Where an EU arrival-delay claim qualifies, compensation is assessed under the normal framework, including possible reductions. A justified extraordinary-circumstances defence can affect fixed compensation without answering the separate transfer-cost question. Use the EU authority guide for the full eligibility test rather than treating diversion as its own payment category.

Connections and costs beyond the transfer

If another flight on the same reservation is affected, ask the airline to confirm the whole replacement itinerary. A rail ticket bought independently, prepaid parking or a missed hotel night is a different issue. Keep evidence, but do not add every later loss to the airport-transfer request as though all are automatically covered.

The missed-connection guide distinguishes booking arrangements. For receipts and shared bills, use the expenses workflow. For refusal to provide onward travel, use the replacement-flight decision checklist.

UK and US diversions: check the separate framework

UK: first establish UK coverage. The CAA's CAP2155 rerouting guidance is a UK-specific starting point for alternative transport and comparable conditions. Do not assume a 2021 EU judgment automatically decides a UK-only dispute. Keep the same practical transfer evidence and use the UK guide for the complaint route.

US: a completed diverted journey is not automatically refundable under DOT rules. The US refund guide explains the significance of airport changes and accepting travel. Check the operating airline's contract, current assistance commitments and any other applicable rights; EU transfer rules cannot simply be applied to every domestic US flight.

Diverted flight FAQ

Can I take a taxi immediately and send the bill?

Ask for the airline's transfer first where possible. If it does not provide required transport, document the failure and choose a necessary, reasonable option. A taxi receipt alone does not guarantee reimbursement, especially if a suitable transfer was available.

Does landing at a different airport guarantee compensation?

No. Separate the transfer obligation from the fixed-compensation test. Route coverage, the completed arrival delay, the circumstances and other conditions matter.

What if I agree to finish the transfer somewhere else?

Keep a written record of the nearby destination agreed with the airline and when you reached it. Do not assume a destination chosen unilaterally is treated in the same way.
