Airline Will Not Reroute You: Before Booking Your Own Replacement
Ask for a usable reroute, preserve the airline response and compare the whole journey before spending on replacement travel. Refund choices and evidence matter.

No useful replacement flight? Pause before paying again
Quick answer: On a covered EU or UK cancellation, ask the airline for rerouting if you still need to travel. Record the request, the available alternatives and its response before buying your own replacement. Self-booking may lead to a reimbursement dispute; it is not an automatic entitlement to any fare you choose.
An app offering only a flight several days later is not the whole conversation. A useful request identifies a workable alternative and asks the airline to arrange it. A useful evidence file shows what seats were actually available, what the journey would involve and why the offered replacement did not meet the rerouting obligation.
This is a decision and evidence workflow for cancellation under EU/UK rules. The main cancellation guide owns the broader refund, notice and compensation tests. A delay that has not become a cancellation, a missed self-transfer and a voluntary ticket change need separate analysis.
Decide whether you still want to travel
| Choice | What it means | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest-opportunity rerouting | You still need transport to the final destination. | The whole itinerary, comparable conditions and assistance while waiting. |
| Later travel at your convenience | You choose another date, subject to seat availability. | Which date is confirmed and how choosing it affects continuing care. |
| Refund | You choose reimbursement instead of the relevant transport. | The affected sectors and the consequences for onward travel and care. |
The CAA's current consumer travel advice warns against choosing a refund when you still want rerouting. Once you commit to a choice, you are unlikely to be able to change it. An unsolicited refund is a different factual situation from a refund you knowingly selected.
Keep screenshots of the choices and confirmation screens. If the airline refunds without offering the required alternatives, object promptly in writing if you still want transport. Do not hide the refund in a later claim: it affects the calculation and must not produce double recovery.
Ask for a specific, workable reroute
The CAA cancellation guidance says significantly earlier flights with another carrier, or suitable alternative transport, may need consideration. Its CAP2155 guidance explains the regulator's approach to comparable conditions and rerouting. This is not a promise that any preferred flight must be bought.
Suggested request to adapt: I still wish to travel and am requesting rerouting, not a voluntary refund. Your offer arrives on [date/time]. I can see [alternative itinerary] arriving on [date/time], with seats shown for [number of passengers]. Please check and arrange the earliest suitable option, including onward sectors and required assistance. If you cannot, please explain the reason in writing.
Use an official airline channel. If you booked with an agent, tell it about the cancellation too, but preserve your request to the operating airline about the disrupted transport. Keep each case reference and avoid confusing a seller's optional change fee with a statutory rerouting request.
Compare whole journeys, not search-result headlines
| Detail | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|
| Availability and time checked | A cached search result is weaker than a current booking screen showing seats for the actual party. |
| Final arrival, not only departure | An early departure with a long connection may arrive after another option. |
| Airports and transfers | A different airport can add transport, time and accessibility requirements. |
| Baggage, cabin and passenger needs | A headline fare may omit necessary baggage or be unsuitable for the original travel conditions. |
| Connections and documents | A proposed route must allow usable connections and entry or transit requirements. |
| Total price and refund terms | Save the actual payable fare, currency and relevant cancellation conditions before committing. |
Do not enter false passenger details or make speculative reservations to create evidence. Save a truthful comparison of available options and the time you checked. For a family, check seats for everyone rather than multiplying the cheapest single-seat result.
Record refusal or lack of response
- Keep the cancellation notice and the itinerary as originally booked.
- Save the alternative offered, including when it was offered and any deadline for responding.
- Record contact attempts with timestamps, channel and outcome. Distinguish an unanswered message from an explicit refusal.
- Explain the time pressure, such as the last bookable alternative, without inventing urgency or claiming a seat was available after it sold out.
- Ask for confirmation of any instruction to book yourself and what the airline says it will reimburse.
There is no universal waiting timer in this guide that turns silence into unlimited spending permission. The relevant circumstances and available transport matter. Do not rely on a social-media claim that a fixed number of minutes always allows self-booking.
If you decide to self-book
The EU's official passenger guidance describes reimbursement where the carrier fails to provide required earliest-opportunity rerouting, and the price-difference situation after a unilateral refund without the required choice. Proving that failure and the replacement's comparable conditions remains important.
Keep the fare evidence from before payment, the new ticket, payment receipt and proof you actually used the replacement. Explain any necessary baggage or transfer costs separately. A premium upgrade for comfort or a detour to visit friends should not be presented as an unavoidable replacement.
Before committing, assess whether you could carry the cost if reimbursement is delayed or disputed. A refundable alternative may reduce risk, but read its terms rather than assuming that label covers every fee. FlyClaimer cannot approve spending, bind an airline or promise reimbursement.
Do not buy twice on an assumption. If a usable reroute was offered and you rejected it for personal preference, reimbursement of another ticket may be disputed. If you voluntarily chose a refund, do not assume the airline still owes a replacement ticket as well.
Worked example: the airline app offers travel two days later
Illustrative situation: a traveller's EU-covered flight is cancelled. The app offers a departure two days later. The traveller finds a same-day economy option with another carrier, including the necessary baggage, and sends the airline its times and fare while requesting rerouting.
If the airline arranges that option, the traveller saves the new itinerary and checks the remaining sectors. If it refuses or does not respond before availability changes, the traveller documents that history and evaluates the risk of self-booking. The mere existence of a more expensive ticket is not proof that every cost must be repaid.
If a refund then appears without being requested, the traveller records it and explains the outstanding amount rather than submitting the full replacement price as though no refund existed. A decision-maker can then see the offers, the choices and the actual net loss.
Keep waiting costs and compensation separate
While waiting for covered rerouting, ask about meals, accommodation and transfers as needed. Use the care-expenses guide to organise those receipts. Transfer costs after a changed arrival airport have their own practical questions in the diversion guide.
Fixed compensation has separate route, notice, timing and cause tests. A successful rerouting request does not prove that compensation is due, and an extraordinary-circumstances defence does not automatically answer the transport obligation. Start with EU rights or UK rights.
If the replacement cost is disputed
Send a concise chronology and an itemised net request to the airline, identifying the obligation you say was not met. Include its offers, your response, available alternatives, the replacement ticket and any refund received. Ask for the specific reason for any refusal, not only a generic compensation decision.
For the UK, the CAA complaint process distinguishes ADR from PACT assistance; PACT cannot impose a decision on the airline. For EU cases consult the appropriate country complaint route. Do not assume every regulator can order individual payment or that every airline belongs to an ADR scheme.
US rebooking is not the same rule
For a domestic US cancellation, check airline rebooking commitments and the ticket-refund rules separately. DOT refund eligibility does not itself guarantee repayment of a replacement fare with another carrier. Use the US cancellation and rebooking guide; do not apply the EU/UK workflow without checking coverage.
Replacement flight FAQ
Must the airline always book my preferred competitor?
No. The question is whether it meets the applicable rerouting obligation under comparable conditions, considering available alternatives. Save a specific workable option and ask the airline to assess it.
Can I accept a refund and still demand any replacement fare?
Do not assume that. A voluntary refund choice and an unsolicited refund without the required alternatives are different situations. Preserve the evidence and account for money already returned.
Is a screenshot of a cheap flight enough?
It helps, but save the date, seats for the actual party, complete itinerary, total fare and relevant conditions. Also keep the rerouting request and the airline's response or documented lack of response.
Useful next steps
- Build the full disruption evidence file.
- Check ticket-agent refund responsibilities.
- Plan a family short-break backup.
- Plan winter rerouting and overnight care.
