Quick answer

A Wizz Air booking can involve different operating companies. Identify the carrier on your flight confirmation, then check the route and disruption. A qualifying EU-covered arrival delay can lead to compensation; a cancellation, boarding refusal or expense request has different conditions. A low fare does not by itself remove passenger rights.

Can You Claim Compensation from Wizz Air?

Do not stop at the Wizz Air brand or the website that sold the ticket. Wizz Air's company information lists separate Hungarian, Maltese and UK companies. Wizz Air Hungary and Wizz Air Malta are EU carriers; Wizz Air UK is a UK carrier. Check the actual operator for the travel date, especially for older bookings or a substituted service.

Use the EU coverage guide, UK261 guide and ECAA and Balkan route guide for the wider tests. Norway and Iceland participate through the EEA; Swiss journeys need their own scope and enforcement check. These are route pointers, not permission to recover the same entitlement twice. The CAA coverage matrix helps distinguish UK-carrier cases.

How Much Compensation Can You Claim?

For an eligible EU261 arrival-delay claim, use the applicable distance and delay band below. Measure arrival at the legally relevant destination, rather than treating the departure-board delay as decisive.

Covered journeyArrival delayAmount per passenger
1,500 km or lessAt least 3 hours€250
More than 1,500 km within the EU; other flights over 1,500 km up to 3,500 kmAt least 3 hours€400
Other flights over 3,500 kmAt least 3 but less than 4 hours€300
Other flights over 3,500 kmAt least 4 hours€600

Eligibility and extraordinary-circumstance conditions still apply. Cancellation and denied-boarding rerouting reductions are separate; use the delay guide and Your Europe guidance. For a UK claim, use the sterling table i UK261 amounts.

Different requests need different evidence

A ticket refund returns the qualifying unused fare; fixed compensation addresses an eligible disruption; an expense request explains what necessary care was missing. State each separately. A compensation defence does not automatically remove care. Ask for help before arranging it yourself, and keep itemised receipts.

For a covered cancellation, compare refund with rerouting at the earliest opportunity or later travel subject to availability. An open credit is not the same as confirmed replacement transport. After a departure delay of at least five hours, an abandoned-journey refund can become relevant. Check Articles 5, 6, 8 and 9 before assuming every purchase will be reimbursed.

Common Wizz Air Refusal Reasons

Assess the reason given in your own file. This is not a claim that every Wizz refusal is improper or that a generic response proves liability.

Ask for clarification

  • Which event affected your flight?
  • How did it cause the recorded delay or cancellation?
  • What reasonable alternatives were considered?
  • Which notice or replacement-flight timing is disputed?

Check your own evidence

  • Correct operating company and travel date.
  • Original itinerary and actual arrival.
  • What you accepted, declined or did not receive.
  • Documents requested and already supplied.

External restrictions: relevant weather, security or air-traffic events can support a defence. Another aircraft departing is useful context, not proof that the same restrictions did not affect your service. Operational labels: aircraft, crew or rotation wording needs detail; it should not be accepted or rejected automatically.

A focused follow-up

Ask which fact changed the decision. For example: "Please identify the event affecting my flight, the relevant timeline and the measures considered, and confirm whether my separate expense request has been assessed." Remove any part that does not fit your case.

Wizz Air Response Time and Claim Follow-Up

Wizz's claim-submission guidance states a 30-day processing aim. That is not a measured average, a guaranteed payment date or a court limitation period.

No progress after the stated aimLast message date and current status.Check spam and follow up on the original thread; duplicate claims do not accelerate review.
Decision or payment promisedAccepted remedy, amount and payment details.Distinguish a decision from money received; record any separate expense decision.

The claim-stage and follow-up guide helps organise a stalled case without inventing a payout timetable.

Choose the category that matches the request and save the confirmation. If the help link redirects or requires login, enter through Wizz's official website and select claims in your account. Never send your account password or full payment-card details in a public comment. For another passenger, check the authorisation requirements rather than assuming a shared booking permits unrestricted disclosure.

When to Use a Claims Partner Instead of Claiming Direct

OptionWhat you controlCheck before proceeding
Direct airline requestYou present the evidence and handle follow-up.No claims-company fee; escalation or court procedures can have separate conditions or costs.
Independent dispute resolutionA qualifying unresolved complaint is assessed by the relevant scheme.Route/operator eligibility, entry conditions and deadlines.
Optional claims partnerYou authorise another business to handle a supported claim.Current fees, cancellation terms, representation versus assignment and supported jurisdictions.

Wizz publishes direct-submission and third-party authorisation requirements. Read them alongside your chosen provider's terms; this guide does not decide whether a disputed contractual restriction is enforceable. Advice can be sought before filing. Do not assume an older or rejected case becomes valid merely because a partner accepts it for review.

Check If Your Wizz Air Flight May Qualify

The optional AirHelp checker assesses supported flight-compensation claims. FlyClaimer provides information and may earn a referral commission; it does not decide your claim. You can also claim directly.

Required Documents for a Wizz Air Claim

  • Booking confirmation identifying the operating company, journey and passengers.
  • Boarding pass or other evidence of timely check-in and presentation, where relevant.
  • Original and revised schedules, airline messages and actual-arrival evidence.
  • Cancellation-notice timestamp and every replacement or credit offer.
  • Itemised receipts, assistance requests and approval or refusal of expenses.
  • Claim ID, submitted documents and the complete reply chain.

Make the file easy to review

Prepare a short dated timeline and keep original documents privately. Send relevant copies through the official channel. Redact unrelated personal information, but do not remove facts needed to establish the passenger, booking or expense.

Wizz Air Routes Between the Balkans and the EU

Tirana, Skopje or Pristina is not automatically an EU departure. Identify both airports and the operating company before choosing EU261, UK261 or local-law wording. A route to the EU on an EU Wizz operator differs from a route to the UK on Wizz Air UK; an itinerary wholly outside those systems needs its own analysis.

Keep separate tickets separate in your evidence. A self-transfer guarantee sold by an agent is not automatically a protected airline connection. The connection guide explains the booking distinction; the free next-step planner can help organise documents without uploading them.

What to Do If Wizz Air Rejects or Stalls Your Claim

  1. Identify the disputed fact. Request a reasoned answer and provide any genuinely missing document in the existing case.
  2. Check ADR eligibility. AviationADR's Wizz page currently lists journeys involving a departure or destination in Hungary, the UK or Germany. Its entry test is an unresolved written complaint plus a final response or eight weeks allowed for response. Confirm current operator, route and scheme rules before filing.
  3. Use the appropriate alternative. If that scheme does not cover the case, consult the relevant national enforcement or dispute-resolution route. Regulatory reporting is not always individual payment recovery.
  4. Protect legal deadlines. A complaint, negotiation or portal status does not necessarily stop a court clock. Seek qualified advice for the jurisdiction and facts instead of relying on a universal airline deadline.

For UK procedure use the UK guide; for local European processes see Germany, France, Spain and Netherlands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim compensation from Wizz Air for a 3-hour delay?

Potentially, if the operating carrier, route and arrival delay satisfy the applicable framework and no valid compensation defence applies. Use the relevant EU or UK amounts; a three-hour departure delay alone does not settle the claim.

Does Wizz Air have its own complaint form?

Yes. Start with Wizz's official claim-submission instructions, choose the appropriate category and keep the claim ID. Your account and original correspondence are the places to track and follow up the request.

Should I claim directly with Wizz Air first?

Direct filing lets you present the request without a claims-company fee and may be required before ADR. Read Wizz's published submission requirements and any representative's terms. A partner is optional and cannot guarantee recovery.

What if Wizz Air says the disruption was due to extraordinary circumstances?

Ask how the specific event affected your flight and what measures were considered. Compare the answer with your evidence. Keep any care or expense request separate; rejecting compensation does not automatically decide those rights.

Can I also recover meal, hotel, or transport costs?

Necessary, reasonable expenses may be recoverable where care was owed and not provided. Keep the assistance request, response and itemised receipts. Unapproved luxury costs or a self-purchased replacement ticket are not automatically reimbursable.
