Your first decision

A Eurowings flight arriving at least three hours late may qualify for EU261 compensation if the route is covered and no valid extraordinary-circumstances defence applies. Cancellations and involuntary denied boarding have different tests. Before completing a form, identify the operating airline and separate fixed compensation from a ticket refund and necessary expenses.

Does EU261 cover your Eurowings flight?

Use the airports and operating carrier on your booking, not your nationality or where you bought the ticket. These are starting checks for a single flight; connecting itineraries need the complete reservation.

Eurowings, Eurowings Europe or Discover Airlines?

Look for the legal carrier name in the booking confirmation, check-in documents and any operator-change message. Eurowings' imprint identifies Eurowings GmbH. Its company announcement identifies Eurowings Europe Limited as the Malta-based licensed airline. Do not describe it as the former Austrian company or decide responsibility from a flight-number prefix alone.

A group logo does not identify your claim recipient

Discover Airlines, formerly Eurowings Discover, is a separate airline. A ticket sold by Lufthansa does not by itself make Lufthansa responsible for a Eurowings-operated disruption.

See Discover Airlines' brand explanation. For a Lufthansa-operated journey, use our Lufthansa guide.

If another airline supplied the aircraft and crew: ask which company had operational responsibility. Wet leasing is not the same as an ordinary codeshare; aircraft paint and crew uniforms are not decisive. The Court's Wirth judgment, C-532/17, distinguishes the responsible operator from a company merely leasing out an aircraft and crew. Keep the written explanation if the airlines refer you to one another.

How much Eurowings delay compensation could apply?

This table is for an eligible EU arrival-delay claim. The fixed amount is per passenger and is not calculated from the price of a BASIC, SMART or other fare. It is not an estimate of your chance of success.

Distance categoryFinal arrival delayAmount
Up to 1,500 kmAt least 3 hours€250
Intra-EU over 1,500 km; other flights over 1,500 km up to 3,500 kmAt least 3 hours€400
Other flights over 3,500 kmAt least 3 but less than 4 hours€300
Other flights over 3,500 kmAt least 4 hours€600

Coverage, the cause and any valid defence must still be established. Cancellation and denied-boarding rerouting reductions have their own timing rules. See Your Europe and the delay-compensation guide; do not apply the euro table to a UK-only claim.

Cancelled or refused boarding: what changes?

Cancellation

Save the timestamp when you were informed and the offered replacement. Notice at least 14 days ahead can exclude fixed compensation. Shorter notice is not automatically payable: departure and arrival timings of the offered rerouting, and any valid extraordinary-circumstances defence, still matter.

Use the cancellation guide for the full notice exceptions.

Boarding refusal

Keep proof of your reservation and timely presentation, plus the airline's reason. Involuntary overbooking is different from volunteering for benefits, arriving late or a justified safety or travel-document refusal.

Use the denied-boarding guide before treating every gate refusal as compensable.

For a missed connection, retain every flight leg and the actual final arrival. Separate tickets are not automatically protected as one journey. Start with the connection guide if the airline delay affected an onward flight.

Compensation, refund and expenses are different claims

What you needWhat the request addressesPractical route
Fixed compensationEligible disruption under passenger-rights rules.Eurowings compensation tool.
Ticket refund or replacement travelYour transport choice after cancellation, or a qualifying long delay when you no longer travel.Use the booking options linked from Eurowings passenger rights.
Necessary care expensesReasonable meals, accommodation and transfers where assistance was due but not provided.Eurowings contact form, with itemised receipts and circumstances.

Choose refund or travel deliberately

After a covered cancellation, understand the refund-versus-rerouting choice before accepting it. Choosing a refund normally ends the alternative rerouting entitlement; it does not automatically settle a separate fixed-compensation claim. A voluntary cancellation of an operating flight is different. A voucher is not compulsory where a monetary remedy is due.

Ask for assistance before paying privately where practicable. If no help is available, keep the request, response and reasonable alternatives you found. An airline's published meal or hotel policy is not automatically the legal ceiling for necessary care. A valid weather defence to fixed compensation does not by itself remove applicable care duties. Regulation 261, Articles 8 and 9, sets the transport and assistance framework.

What if Eurowings says the disruption was extraordinary?

Request the event, when it happened, its link to your flight and what reasonable measures were considered. A label such as operational reasons, strike or weather does not answer all four questions.

Look more closely

Ordinary technical problems and airline staff strikes are generally treated differently from events outside airline control. Ask whose staff were involved and whether a later crew or aircraft shortage arose from an earlier disruption.

A defence may apply

Severe weather, external air-traffic-control action or an airport security event may support a defence, but the airline must establish the flight-specific connection and reasonable-measures test. Other flights taking off is useful context, not decisive proof.

The Commission's interpretative guidelines explain these distinctions. Our evidence-request guide helps you write a focused reply.

How to submit a Eurowings compensation claim

  1. Identify the booking. Gather the flight number, travel date, booking reference and operating-carrier name. For a connection, include the whole original itinerary.
  2. Write a short timeline. Record scheduled and actual arrival, notification time for a cancellation, and the replacement offered. Distinguish a departure delay from your final arrival.
  3. List separate remedies. Keep fixed compensation, unused-ticket reimbursement and itemised expenses distinct. State what has already been refunded or accepted.
  4. Use the official channel. Eurowings' claim instructions link to its tool. Have the flight details, booking code and passenger details ready. Provide payment details only through the verified airline channel when needed.
  5. Keep confirmation. Retain the submitted text, attachments, case reference and date. If the tool cannot process your case, use the official contact form and describe the problem; an automated failure is not a court decision.
  6. Track the response. Follow up on the same reference. Avoid parallel, inconsistent submissions or signing with more than one claims company without understanding any assignment.

A useful opening for your own message

My claim concerns [flight number] on [date], operated by [carrier], booking [reference]. The scheduled arrival was [time] and the actual final arrival was [time]. I request [remedy and basis]. Please address the attached evidence and explain any disputed cause, notice exception or reduction. My separate necessary expenses total [amount], with receipts attached.

Replace the brackets with accurate facts; do not send a speculative amount or unnecessary passport copies. If booked through an agent or tour operator, obtain the airline booking reference and contact the seller about booking access. Limited app access does not by itself decide your statutory claim against the operating carrier.

No reply or a rejected Eurowings claim?

First identify what is actually disputed: route coverage, operator, timing, cause, notice or expenses. Reply to that issue with evidence instead of opening another generic compensation request.

  1. Ask for the reason in writing. Keep the rejection and original case reference. For a form error, explain the error and use the official contact route.
  2. Check independent conciliation. For an eligible private-travel dispute, Eurowings directs passengers to Schlichtung Reise & Verkehr. Complain to the airline first; the body's instructions describe the two-month response period and an application when the answer is unsatisfactory or no answer arrives. Check participation and admissibility for the actual operator and case.
  3. Keep enforcement and payment separate. The Germany guide explains conciliation versus an LBA regulatory complaint. A regulator report is not a payment order. Other routes may have another competent body.

Do not let a deadline expire while waiting. Limitation depends on the applicable law and claim type; there is no single Eurowings deadline for every itinerary. See the German deadline checks and obtain individual advice for an older claim. No fixed payout time or successful outcome is promised by this guide.

Eurowings compensation FAQs

Can a cheap Eurowings ticket qualify for compensation?

Yes, a low fare does not by itself exclude a claim. The applicable route, disruption, timing and cause matter. EU fixed compensation is based on the relevant distance category, not a percentage of the ticket price.

Do I claim from Eurowings or Lufthansa?

Check the legal operating carrier, not just the seller or group brand. A Lufthansa-sold ticket does not automatically make Lufthansa responsible. If another company supplied aircraft and crew, operational responsibility may need clarification.

Does an error in the Eurowings claim tool mean I am ineligible?

Not necessarily. Check the flight and booking details, keep the error and contact Eurowings through its official contact form. A tool failure does not replace an explanation of the claim or independent review.

Can I request expenses after compensation is rejected?

Possibly. Necessary care expenses are separate from fixed compensation. Explain what assistance was due, what you requested and what you reasonably paid, with receipts. A valid extraordinary-circumstances defence does not by itself remove applicable care duties.

Is accepting a voucher compulsory?

No, not where a monetary remedy is due. Read the offer to see whether it concerns a refund, compensation or a settlement. Keep a copy and understand any agreement before accepting it.

How long will Eurowings take to pay?

There is no verified typical payout time in this guide. Keep the case reference, follow up on the specific request and check independent conciliation if the response is unsatisfactory or the relevant waiting period has passed. Protect any applicable legal deadline.
