easyJet Cancelled Flight Claim: Refunds, Rerouting and Compensation

easyJet cancellation: choose transport first, assess compensation separately

Quick answer: Check the operating carrier, route and when easyJet told you about the cancellation. A covered cancellation gives a refund or rerouting choice, but fewer than 14 days' notice does not guarantee fixed compensation. The offered departure and arrival times, cause and possible reductions still matter.

Save the original booking before accepting a replacement. easyJet operates through different legal carriers, and EU261 and UK261 do not use identical geographic scope or currency. Do not copy a euro amount into every UK claim or assume a booking brand alone answers coverage.

1. Reimbursement or rerouting

For a covered cancellation, choose reimbursement or the relevant rerouting option. Rerouting at the earliest opportunity is not necessarily limited to another easyJet flight. Explain an unsuitable offer and request help before independently buying replacement travel. Keep records of available alternatives and the airline's response.

2. Necessary care while waiting

easyJet's disruption guidance explains assistance and expense submissions. Keep valid itemised receipts and what assistance was offered. Necessary meals, overnight accommodation and airport-hotel transport differ from unused holiday hotels or missed excursions. Do not assume a ticket refund includes unlimited further care.

3. Possible fixed compensation

Assess this independently from transport and care. A cancellation can qualify, but coverage, notice, offered rerouting and any supported extraordinary-circumstances defence must be checked. Refund and compensation can coexist in a qualifying case; neither automatically proves the other.

Which compensation amount applies?

Base amounts for eligible claims, before permitted reductions
Distance / regimeEU261UK261
Up to 1,500 km€250£220
Medium-distance band€400: intra-EU over 1,500 km and other routes over 1,500 to 3,500 km£350: 1,500 to 3,500 km
Other long-haul band€600: other covered routes over 3,500 km£520: over 3,500 km

Use the EU261 guide or UK261 guide for the exact applicable band and reductions. The old example of an easyJet Heathrow service has been removed; route examples should not invent a service or substitute estimated distance for the actual itinerary.

Notice exceptions are not the same as a 50% reduction

At least 14 days' notice

Under the EU cancellation test, this normally excludes fixed cancellation compensation. The covered refund or rerouting choice remains separate. Preserve when you received the notice, including messages sent through an agent.

Shorter notice and offered rerouting

EU261 cancellation exceptions in Article 5(1)(c)
NoticeOffered departureOffered final arrival
7 to fewer than 14 daysNo more than 2 hours earlierLess than 4 hours later
Fewer than 7 daysNo more than 1 hour earlierLess than 2 hours later

Both timing conditions in the relevant row matter. These exceptions determine whether cancellation compensation is due. Separately, Article 7(2) can permit a 50% reduction for rerouting within its distance-dependent arrival windows. Arriving within one hour is not a universal stand-alone cancellation exception. See Regulation 261/2004, Articles 5 and 7.

An extraordinary circumstance caused the cancellation

Ask for the specific event, connection to the flight and reasonable measures taken. Another flight operating in the area is context, not conclusive proof. Ordinary fog, rain, a staff dispute or a technical issue should not be classified solely from its label.

Build a clear cancellation claim

1. Establish the itinerary and test

Identify the operating carrier, coverage, notice and offered rerouting. Keep the old and revised booking side by side.

2. Attach relevant evidence

  • Booking and passenger details.
  • Cancellation notice and date received.
  • Every replacement offer and actual arrival.
  • Itemised care receipts and the airline's explanation.

3. Use the official process

The easyJet compensation portal requests the booking, affected flight and original date. Use the expense process for receipts and the refund process for the ticket; retain each confirmation. Do not submit another passenger's personal information without authority.

4. Review before escalating

Respond to the actual rejection reason. Use the appropriate ADR or enforcement route for the carrier and journey, as described in the easyJet authority guide. A regulator, ADR body and court have different roles; do not submit the same unresolved dispute indiscriminately to every organisation.

Track the claim without relying on a promised timetable

StageUseful record
SubmittedDate, full submission and reference.
More evidence requestedWhat was requested, what you supplied and when.
AcceptedWritten amount, payment method and airline's stated payment date.
Rejected or unansweredReason, complaint eligibility and applicable limitation period.

There is no reliable universal number of days from submission to payment. A claims service does not guarantee a quicker outcome. Time limits depend on jurisdiction; England and Wales and Scotland should not be combined into a single six-year UK claim rule.

School holidays do not create an extra compensation band

Document practical needs such as necessary accessible assistance or travelling with children, but do not assume the date or a missed event increases fixed compensation. Package-travel or insurance questions require a separate assessment.

Booked through an agent?

Keep the agent confirmation and airline itinerary. An agent booking does not automatically remove the passenger's flight rights, but ticket reimbursement may require coordination with the party holding the payment. See the agent-refund guide.
